E + R = O: The Foundation of Conscious Parenting

The foundation of conscious parenting is taking 100% responsibility.
Instead of focusing on changing your child, this formula helps you understand how your response creates your experience as a parent.

Core Concept : E + R = O

E = Event (What happens)
R = Response (How you react)
O = Outcome (What you experience)

Every outcome in parenting is shaped not just by what happens, but by how you respond.

Everyday Parenting Examples

• Child not listening → You shout → Child resists • Tantrum → You react with frustration → Tantrum escalates • Screen time conflict → You give in → Child pushes limits • Sibling fight → You take sides → Conflict increases • Homework refusal → You pressure → Child avoids more

Awareness Exercise
Think of a recent challenging situation with your child and reflect:

– What happened (Event)? – How did you respond? – What was the outcome? – What were you feeling in that moment? – What triggered you?

Reflection Worksheet

Event (E): ____________________________ Response (R): _________________________ Outcome (O): __________________________ What triggered you? ____________________ What can you do differently next time? ______________________________

Reframing Your Response

Next time this situation happens, choose a conscious response: Pause before reacting. Notice your emotions. Respond calmly. Focus on connection

    Commitment To Change

This week, I will practice awareness in this situation: ________________________________________

My new response will be: ________________________________________

On a scale of 1–10, my commitment level is: ______

You cannot always control your child’s behaviour BUT you can control your response.

And when you change your response you change your outcome.
